What Goes Around . . .
The exciting news in Rego Park and Forest Hills is that professional tennis is returning to the Forest Hills Stadium, once the home of the U.S. Open before it moved to the larger National Tennis Center in Flushing in 1977. Also, through the late 1980’s, the venue was well known for hosting live concerts; showcasing performances by high-profile entertainers like The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand and the Rolling Stones. The property remained in use as a local private tennis club, the West Side Tennis Club.
A partnership with new concert promoters, and a complete renovation of the facility, brought events back to the neighborhood in 2013. And now, once again, professional tennis returns to the West Side Tennis Club as they welcome the New York Empire, a newly created team in Mylan World Team Tennis.
An announcement of the new franchise was aired on February 17th, noting World Team Tennis has not had a team in the city since the New York Sportimes moved to San Diego in 2014. The Empire will take a prominent position in the 2016 tennis season as they compete with five other teams for the King Trophy. Patrick McEnroe will serve as the team’s coach in the inaugural season and former U.S. Open Champion Andy Roddick will be its’ first player.

The New York Empire is one of six teams competing in the Mylan World Team Tennis league.

Orange County Breakers
San Diego Aviators
Mylan World Team Tennis was co-founded by the legendary Billie Jean King and is operating it’s 41st season in 2016.
The unique and innovative format features 2 men and 2 women on a team and 5 sets of tennis are played each night – one set each of men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. Whichever team wins the most games at the end of the 5 sets, wins the match.
There is an electric atmosphere at each match unlike any other tennis event you have ever attended – we encourage cheering for your hometown team, we have pre-match activities, contests on-court, and world-class tennis in an intimate stadium.
All children 16 years old and younger have the opportunity to come on the court at the end of each match to get autographs from the players.
The Empire will play 6 home matches and 6 on the road in its quest for the Mylan WTT Championship. Season dates are July 31 – August 13, 2016. The top two teams will advance to the Mylan WTT Finals, to be held in the New York area on August 27th.
