Laughter is the Best Medicine…Take 2
The Forest Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps will be hosting a fundraiser on Saturday, August 22nd at The Theater in Flushing Meadow Park.
Associated with New York City’s FDNY Mutual Aid Response System, a FHVAC ambulance responds with an on-board crew of at least one New York State Emergency Medical Technician, one CPR certified (or better) driver, and usually one Certified First Responder (or better) attendant. Most members of the Corps have had no prior medical background and have been trained by The Corps and State classes in everything from dispatching to being a State Certified Emergency Medical Technician.
While Forest Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps focus is primarily on the Forest Hills and Rego Park neighborhoods, the FHVAC was one of the first responders to arrive on the scene after the terrorist attack upon the World Trade Center. So dedicated were the volunteers on duty that morning that, when their ambulance FH1 was destroyed in the tragedy, members commandeered a city bus, and traveled to the site of the attacks with extra medical equipment and supplies. Sadly, the collapse of the Twin Towers resulted in the death of one of their own, Richard Allen Pearlman, a volunteer medic.
In addition to providing free emergency care and transportation, the FHVAC also provides non-emergency medical transports to and from hospitals and health facilities, teaches first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to the community, and lends wheelchairs, walkers, and other medical supplies to those who need them. The ambulance corps covers many community events, including the New York City Marathon, the Five Borough Bike Tour, the annual Night Out Against Crime, and local street fairs and special events.
C’mon out and show your support for these unpaid volunteers always at the ready to support you with ’round-the-clock ambulance service. Tickets are $40.00 and $50.00 and can be purchased online at www.queenstheatre.org, ordered via telephone at 718-760-0064 or picked up at Royal Sports on Metropolitan Avenue, or Queens Theatre Box Office in Flushing Meadow Park.
